How does a cash drawer connect to a POS system?

Most cash drawers connect to a receipt printer using an RJ11 cable, the same type used for telephone connections. When a cash sale is completed, the POS software sends a signal through the printer, which triggers the drawer to open automatically. This means the drawer itself doesn’t need to be connected directly to the POS terminal. USB cash drawers are an alternative for systems without a receipt printer, connecting directly to the terminal instead.

Can a cash drawer be opened manually without a transaction?

Yes. All cash drawers include a physical key that allows manual opening for cash counts, float setup or emergency access. Most models ship with two keys. The key override works independently of the POS system, so if your software or printer goes offline, you can still access the drawer.

Are cash drawers compatible with all receipt printers?

Cash drawers with an RJ11 connection work with most commercial receipt printers that include a dedicated cash drawer port. This covers the majority of 80mm thermal printers used in retail and hospitality.
